Waste Collection Services

Great Victoria Desert Council provides comprehensive waste management services to keep our community clean and protect our environment.

Kerbside Collection Schedule

Kerbside collection services operate in town centres, with transfer stations serving remote communities across 348,750 km².

  • General Waste (Red Lid): Collected weekly on your designated collection day
  • Recycling (Yellow Lid): Collected fortnightly on alternating weeks
  • Green Waste (Green Lid): Collected fortnightly on alternating weeks

Collection Day

Bins must be placed on the kerb by 7:00 AM on your collection day. Please ensure bins are at least 1 meter apart and not blocking footpaths or driveways.

What Goes in Each Bin

General Waste (Red Lid)

  • Food waste and scraps
  • Plastic bags and soft plastics
  • Polystyrene and foam packaging
  • Broken ceramics and crockery
  • Disposable nappies

Recycling (Yellow Lid)

  • Paper and cardboard (flattened)
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Plastic bottles and containers
  • Steel and aluminum cans
  • Milk and juice cartons

Green Waste (Green Lid)

  • Grass clippings and leaves
  • Small branches and twigs
  • Garden prunings
  • Flowers and plants
  • Weeds (without soil)

Bulk Waste Collection

Council provides two free bulk waste collections per year for residential properties. Book your collection online or call our customer service team.

Accepted items: Furniture, white goods, mattresses, electronic equipment, and large household items.

Not accepted: Hazardous materials, building waste, car parts, or gas cylinders.

Waste Transfer Station

The Great Victoria Desert Waste Transfer Station accepts general waste, recyclables, green waste, and e-waste. We accept:

  • General household waste
  • Recyclable materials
  • Green waste
  • E-waste and batteries
  • Scrap metal

Hours: Monday - Saturday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Closed: Sundays and Public Holidays

Hazardous Waste Disposal

Household hazardous waste must be taken to designated drop-off points. This includes:

  • Paint and chemicals
  • Motor oil and batteries
  • Gas bottles
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
