Mark your calendars! The beloved Great Victoria Desert Desert Festival returns for its 15th year from May 15-18, 2026, bringing four spectacular days of music, art, culture, and community celebration to the heart of Central Australia.

Great Victoria Desert Council is proud to present this annual flagship event, which has grown to become one of the Northern Territory's premier cultural festivals, attracting over 35,000 visitors and showcasing the unique spirit of outback Australia.

Festival Highlights

The 2026 Desert Festival will feature an expanded program across four exciting days:

Thursday, May 15 - Opening Night

Welcome to Country Ceremony & Opening Concert

  • 6:00 PM: Traditional Welcome to Country by local Arrernte elders
  • 7:00 PM: Opening concert featuring Indigenous artists and performers
  • 8:30 PM: Official festival opening by Mayor and special guests
  • 9:00 PM: Headline performance on Main Stage
  • Location: Anzac Hill Amphitheatre

Friday, May 16 - Arts & Culture Day

Celebrating Desert Creativity

  • Art Market: 80+ local artists and craftspeople showcasing desert-inspired works
  • Indigenous Art Exhibitions: Special exhibitions from renowned Central Desert artists
  • Live Painting Demonstrations: Watch artists create works throughout the day
  • Workshops: Dot painting, weaving, pottery, and traditional crafts (bookings required)
  • Poetry & Storytelling: Open mic sessions and featured storytellers
  • Film Screenings: Desert Film Festival showcase at Araluen Arts Centre

Saturday, May 17 - Music & Performance Day

Desert Sounds Festival

  • 4 Stages: Main Stage, Acoustic Tent, Indigenous Stage, Youth Stage
  • 30+ Acts: Featuring local, national, and international artists
  • Musical Styles: Rock, folk, country, Indigenous contemporary, electronic, world music
  • Dance Performances: Traditional Indigenous dance and contemporary performances
  • Street Theatre: Roving performers throughout Todd Mall
  • Fireworks Display: 9:30 PM spectacular closing the evening

Sunday, May 18 - Family Fun Day

Community Celebration

  • Kids Zone: Face painting, jumping castles, carnival games, animal farm
  • Family Workshops: Bush tucker tasting, boomerang painting, didgeridoo lessons
  • Sports Activities: Desert dash fun run, community games, camel rides
  • Food Festival: 40+ food vendors celebrating local and Indigenous cuisine
  • Sustainability Hub: Environmental education and eco-friendly activities
  • Closing Ceremony: 4:00 PM community singalong and farewell

Taste traditional Indigenous foods including kangaroo, emu, witchetty grubs, bush tomatoes, and native herbs.

40+ vendors offering cuisines from around the world - Asian, European, Middle Eastern, Mexican, and more.

Outback BBQ

Classic Aussie BBQ featuring steaks, sausages, and fresh local produce cooked outback-style.

Beverage Gardens

Licensed areas featuring local craft beers, Territory wines, cocktails, and premium non-alcoholic options.

Getting There & Parking

The festival is easily accessible with multiple transport options:

Free Shuttle Services

  • Regular shuttles from designated parking areas
  • Runs every 15 minutes from 5:00 PM - 11:00 PM
  • Accessible vehicles available
  • Pick-up/drop-off at major hotels

Parking

  • Free Parking: Great Victoria Desert High School grounds (5-minute shuttle)
  • CBD Parking: Pay parking available in town center
  • Disabled Parking: Reserved spaces near main entrances
  • Bicycle Parking: Secure bike racks throughout venue

Road Closures

Please note the following road closures during festival days:

  • Todd Mall: Closed to vehicles May 15-18 (pedestrian access only)
  • Bath Street: Limited access May 15-18
  • Parsons Street: Closed May 16-17 (5:00 PM - midnight)
